Behind the Designs
In a serene neighborhood with sweeping Mount Diablo views, we revitalized a dated 1980s cottage into a warm, modern retreat. Explore how vaulted ceilings, thoughtfully placed skylights, and subtle Japanese accents bring new life and global style.

Duboce Triangle Edwardian
While walking the dog one afternoon, the husband in this growing San Francisco family came across a Victorian for sale on Duboce Park, one of those rare sunny corners of the city surrounded by cafes, neighbors, and enough green space for both children and dogs. They made an offer and were soon on their way. The primary goals were to update the kitchen and create a bathroom suite where there was none. A large brick chimney dividing the kitchen and dining room was deemed seismically unsafe and removed, opening the two rooms to each other and bringing in considerably more light. Doorways were reconfigured throughout to allow for a cabinetry layout that carefully balances storage and workflow. Having worked with this family before, the team understood their appreciation for the juxtaposition of antique and modern. Shaker cabinets and trim form the backdrop to dyed oak island panels in a deep peacock color, custom mixed with the finisher on site. Clé tiles in contrasting deep green play against a custom metal hood finished at an auto body shop. A garage at the end of the island stores small appliances out of sight. The new bathroom was necessarily compact, carved out of existing bedroom square footage. A vintage clawfoot tub in a smaller proportion was refinished and installed under the window. The floating walnut vanity was sized to balance sink and counter precisely, with a walnut niche above making use of a residual wall cavity. Calacatta basketweave tile on the floor ties the shower to the rest of the room. In the garden, a south-facing deck was designed to catch the light. A bent metal floating stair, fabricated as a single continuous element, descends from a steel plate landing against cedar back panels without ever touching the ground. An integrated gate at the top and a built-in sandbox below accommodate the younger members of the family. Project Manager | Mariati Paham Photographer | Mark Compton

Katie and Sugam, Homeowner
"We have worked with Eisenmann Architecture on four projects over eight years. The scale of projects have ranged from a comprehensive commercial renovation of a historic building (with a particularly challenging planning department process that Eisenmann handled with finesse!) to a simple and modern update of a deck attached to our San Francisco home. We have come to value their ability to blend beautiful design into a warm and livable space. The Eisenmann team is organized, responsive, communicates clearly, and is committed to the project until it’s done. We can’t recommend them more highly!"
