Divisadero Victorian House
A large San Francisco Victorian had been divided into nine boarding units when this couple purchased it. Their goal was to restore it to a unified single-family home. One of them, a strategic real estate agent, also envisioned renting it out for events. The existing kitchen was small, dark, and inadequate for either purpose. It was relocated into one of the former boarding units at the rear of the house, where the larger footprint allowed a kitchen that could serve the couple at home and function effectively for caterers. A long continuous island gives caterers the workspace they need while placing guests comfortably on the opposite side from food preparation. A raised breakfast counter was added at the existing bay window, with an integrated coffee machine nearby. The minimal Arclinea cabinetry suits the clients' aesthetic preferences. The bay window and the back of a brick fireplace discovered during construction were preserved, keeping the Victorian bones visible within the updated interior. One detail worth noting: the color palette and finishes were selected to complement the clients' two cats, one white and one walnut brown.
